New airlines to operate in Peru
Talks at taking place to introduce more competition in domestic flights which is currently dominated by a subsidiary of LAN Chile, The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, José Luis Silva did not mention the names of the groups, but confirmed that they were already "renting or buying aircraft" to start operating in the country. We have seen a big increase in the cost of visiting Peru specially as LANprices are much higher for foreign visitors, with an increase of 17.5% in the number of people taking domestic flights in August over 2011 clearly any additional services would be welcome.
Director Paul Goddard reports
On my recent visit to Peru I was very fortunate to travel with my team from Cuzco to Puerto Maldonado by road. The incredible Interoceanic Highway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean is now open for this 400+ kilometre stretch, with the bridge crossing the Madre de Dios River in Puerto Maldonado now open.
As you leave Cuzco behind you continue to climb to the roof of the world on what seems a perfect black line snaking its way through the Andes far into the distance. Arriving to Quince Mil you enter a protected area of outstanding natural beauty and stunning Rain Forest. The second part is most disturbing and reveals a far less pleasant side to Peru than those would wish you to see. As we drove into the night the lights of the heavy plant machinery could clearly be seen destroying everything in their path, all in the illegal extraction of gold and silver. Shanty towns have grown as first migrant workers arrive to work constructing the Highway, but now completed mine owners are capitalising on the abundance of cheap labour. The story gets worse when I asked why so many houses had blue lights outside and children sitting waiting in the chilly night air, I was told “they are children who work in the under age sex industry”. Every village and small town we passed through for the next two hours was with many of these so called night clubs which shocked me at how quickly and widespread it had become. I am sure you are asking the same questions as me “Why do they allow this to go on” and “Why are the police not here”. The answer is simply, corruption at a level that makes it impossible to stop the tide of destruction.
Thankfully there is a solution to halt the progress and help the local communities find more sustainable work. The Government has put in place a restricted area on a massive scale which protects vast areas of natural forest and habitat. Here they are encouraging tourism and sustainable farming which it is hoped will help protect this unique environment.
Peruvian Secrets through our partners in Peru are working on constructing a lodge and centre for alternative technology to allow people to discover and help protect the many animals and plant life to be found. This will offer a very real alternative Amazon experience with easy accessibility by road from Cuzco, just not requiring a flight to get there will help the environment. Further news on the lodge will be announced as progress is made.
