Destination ~ Nazca

Nazca is the home of the mysterious lined drawings which have mystified anthropologists and scientists alike.

The Nazca lines are a series of drawings and geometrical figures revealing animals, birds and insects.
Some of these figures can reach 1,000 feet in size and are estimated to be over 2,000 years old. The images have been made by removing the stones from the surface and piling them up to the side which also reveals the lighter coloured soil that lay beneath them.

Extreme Dryness

Due to the extreme dryness of this region, and lack of any high winds these unique features have been preserved for all of mankind to see.

Before 1939 Nazca was virtually unheard of and was a place of little importance but then everything changed as Paul Kosok, a North American scientist, whilst flying his tiny plane over this dry, arid region noticed that the previously thought irrigation system were in fact the incredible images that can be seen today. It was Kosok who first considered the Nazca pampa had a connection with the heavens.

It was however, a young German mathematician who would become the greatest authority and dedicate a lifetime to the research and translation of this fascinating area, she was called Maria Reiche. Through her studies and detailed research she strongly presented her case that the Nazca lines were part of an astrological calendar made by the people of the Nazca pampa.

Many other people of course have their own interpretations and theories. These range from the ridiculous to almost science fictional. One of the most famous of these theorists is Enrich Von Daniken with his book Chariots of the Gods, his ideas were based on his fanciful interpretations of the lines in conjunction with various ceramic artefacts that portray images that only today could be interpreted as connected with space travel. He also managed to link other findings in other parts of South America in an attempt to collaborate his theories.
