The undiscovered
North of Peru is still little-known and mostly overlooked
by the average traveller and tour operator. As a result,
this region offers some of the most rewarding experiences
to be had in Peru. Your time here will be complemented by
your stay in our private farmstead for a truly personal
and authentic visit.
On the
northern coast of Peru lies Chiclayo, the commercial centre
of Northern Peru. The bustling city is a mixture of old
and new, has a pleasant Plaza de Armas. |
Excursions
From Chiclayo
Private
Homestead
Venturing
off the well-travelled tourist trail into the north of Peru,
our private homestead is a real 'Peruvian Secret'!
Situated some 60 kilometres north of Chiclayo near the small
village of Salas, which is
well known as being the centre of healers and witchdoctors,
or ‘Shamans’ in Peru!
Located
in a truly dramatic setting, where the savannah scrublands
meet the foothills of the Andes, this beautiful and well-appointed
home is also a working small-holding, built using traditional
materials. You will see lots of native plant species cultivated
in the relaxing gardens. |
 |
 |
As
well as having two of Peru's leading museums within easy
reach, excurions from the farm can include a drive into
the mountain settlements offering stunning scenery and a
real insight into just how people live day-to-day in the
Andes away from the tourist traps. If you have a particular
interest such as bird watching please feel free to discuss
this with your guide as he would be happy to accompany you
for a walk around the grounds looking for some of the 1,700
species of birds to be found in Peru.
All
meals are provided during your stay and you will be able
to taste some excellent Peruvian dishes as well as trying
out some of the area's most unusual fruits. You are sure
to have a wonderful, informative and relaxing time sharing
fine food, good wine and excellent company in an appealing
home that may by without mains electricity but has plenty
of charm. |
Tombs
of Lord Sipan
The
private farmstead is an excellent base from which to visit the
remarkable museum of the Lord of Sipan.
| The
‘Museo Tumbas Reales del Señor Sipán’
or the ‘Lord of Sipan Museum’ was discovered in
the late 1980's when the police arrested a robber trying to
sell gold from the tomb. . This world-class museum exhibits
the most important archaeological remains of the Moche Culture
housing the stunning collection of extraordinary gold, silver
and pottery artefacts and offerings recovered from the excavation
of the tombs of the Lord of Sipan, he was thought to be a
Moche government leader. This is considered to be the most
magnificent archaeological find in the Americas and the visit
can take two to three hours, after which, you can take lunch
in the town of Lambayeque sampling some of the local specialities.
On our return journey we will stop in Tucume to visit the
site of twenty-six ruined pyramid built of adobe (see below).
|
 |
Sican
National Museum
| The
‘Museo Nacional Sicán’ or ‘Sican
National Museum’ is situated in Ferrañafe within
easy reach of Chiclayo itself. Newly opened to the public,
this unique museum is the result of over two decades of scientific
investigation by the Sicán Archaeological Project.
This exhibition focuses on all aspects of the Sicán
people and their culture and is another must-see whilst in
the area. |
Pyramids
of Tucume
| |
From
Lambayeque it is possible to combine a visit to the museum
of Sipan with a stop at the huge site of Tucume, with its
numerous pyramids built of adobe (earth blocks). The site
was originally excavated under the direction of the Norwegian
discoverer Thor Heyerdahl (of the Kon-Tiki reed boat expedition
fame).
Over
the years the pyramids have been somewhat weather-beaten
but the site still captures a sense of their original glory
and there are numerous viewpoints from which it is possible
to see for miles! There is also a small on-site museum. |
Pimentel
| On
the coast, ten kilometres from Chiclayo is the town of Pimentel.
This coastal resort offers fine seafood restaurants and
a variety of water sports during the summer season. From
here can be seen the traditional reed boats still used today
for inshore fishing. The boats still use the same design
as used during the Mocha period. The front of the boat is
made with the curled up point with the fisherman seated
on his knees in order to climb the high waves that are found
on this coastline. Today the waves produce great opportunity
for surfers to show off their skills. Wind surfing is also
popular and some spectacular exhibitions of skill can be
seen. |
 |
Santa
Rosa
Just
south of Pimentel is Santa Rosa, where the brightly painted
fishing boats can be seen sailing onto the beach to unload
their catch. The beach becomes a hive of activity as people
come to purchase the fish and socialise. The fishermen can
be seen sitting in groups mending nets and talking of their
adventures at sea. |
