NEWS ~ The Fortress
of Kuelap
 |
One of Peru’s best kept secrets will soon be opened
up for more tourism. Due
to its more remote location the stunning Fortress of Kuelap
set in the Chachapoyas region has until now only been visited
by the more adventurous traveller. Now with the planned
expansion of the airport at Chachapoyas and work beginning
on a new improved road network it is believed that Kuelap
is set to become one of Peru's major destinations. |
Your
tour to the little-known settlement of Kuelap can be combined
with a visit to the other wonder of the north, the extensive
collection of artefacts found at the burial site of the
Lord of Sipan now housed
in the world-class museum, ‘Museo Tumbas Reales
del Señor Sipán’
For
those who wish to see and experience these places of special
interest we recommend that ideally you try to visit by mid
2007 before mass tourism and the inevitable changes that
come with it, change the feel of this most special of 'Peruvian
Secrets' forever. |

arrival at Tingo you will have the choice of continuing
to the mountain top ruins in the tour bus or climbing

approximately two and half to three hours and affords
splendid views. The horses are lead at walking pace by

More
stone used than in the Great Pyramids
The
ruins consist of around 400 settlements and more stone was
used in its construction than in the great pyramids. The
site is originally pre-Inca and was not built to be lived
in but as a fortress built during a time of many hostilities
from neighbouring tribes.
The invading Incas brought with them firm discipline, but
brought peace to the area. They further developed the site,
making it a settlement and a place of rulership.
Local
People
We use
local people to assist our guide in bringing to life what
was once a major civilisation. During your visit you will
be served a picnic lunch and hot refreshments, this is a
full day tour ending with a breathtaking view of the sunset
before returning to the hotel. |

Great Interest to Plant Lovers
At
the arrival of the ruins you will be amazed at the sheer
size of the fortress. Entrance to the fort is through narrowing
slits allowing only one person to enter at one time. The
area is also of great interest to plant lovers, due to its
unusual microclimate and altitude. Looking up into the trees,
one sees cascades of Spanish moss, orchids and bromeliads
hanging down, the native Peruvian fuchsia can be seen growing
amongst the ruins. |
