Trekking

Peru has two main types of trekking to offer the visitor: jungle trekking and mountain trekking.

Jungle trekking
is usually taken in conjunction with a river trip; Peruvian Secrets can offer a variety of destinations within Peru and are happy to work with you on the most suitable itinerary. From our main hotel in Huaraz we offer a variety of mountain trekking routes that cover many interests, including flora and fauna, cultural interests or just for those after spectacular scenery.

For further information please telephone or e-mail one of our expert advisers.

The Inca Trail

This most challenging, rewarding and breathtaking route has long captured the imagination of trekkers and travellers alike. This contining popularity and the tightening of legislation covering the trail has resulted in availability on the Inca Trail becoming a real issue for the prospective traveller.

Another result of this is that many alternative routes are being opened up (see below) in order to relieve the increasing demands on the Inca Trail however with many trekkers still preferring to follow the classic route to Machu Picchu, early booking is now essential in order to guarantee your space on the trail. Please contact us in order to check the availability of spaces on the Inca Trail for your proposed dates of travel.

Choquequirao ~ The 'new' Machu Picchu!

Described by some as the ‘new’ Machu Picchu this Inca site has been largely overlooked until recently as more stringent measures on the Inca Trail means that Choquequirao is a viable alternative and may even be destined to replace the traditional hike. Choquequirao is believed to mean ‘cradle of gold’ and indeed this was an Inca city of high status. This remote ruin is inaccessible and rarely visited but Peruvian Secrets can offer a five – day trek to the site for the more serious trekker.

Climbing

Peru is now becoming a haven for climbers. Because of past troubles with terrorism the Peruvian Andes provide some of the most spectacular virgin climbing routes, most of which can be reached within one or two days of walking.

Take a look at these impressive statistics:

Over 50 summits of between 5,000 and 6,000 metres with over 20 surpassing 6,000 metres.
633 glaciers and best of all there are no fees for climbing the peaks.
Peruvian Secrets can provide you with a wide range of routes to suit your ability plus we provide you with the very best guides and equipment to ensure your total enjoyment.

Conditions for trekking and climbing

May to September is the dry season but October, November and April can be good times, particularly for trekking. The majority of the bad weather is from the east and can make night-time temperatures very cold. Should you wish to go extreme ice climbing, the best times are from May to July. Whatever your ability or wishes Peruvian Secrets will be happy to take care of all the necessary arrangements. Call one of our expert advisers to build a climbing tour of perfection.

Handgliding ~ Paragliding

This sport is now becoming increasingly popular in Peru; the reason for this becomes obvious when you consider the immensity of the landscapes. For the novice the coastal cliffs offer the easiest thermals and slowly you can make your way up into the Andes gaining experience of different altitudes.

For the more experienced and adventurous nothing can really compare the thrill of flying at over 6,000 metres in front of the glaciers of Huascaran.

One of the greatest areas opening up in Peru is the Sacred Valley of Cusco. The area has excellent launch sites, thermals and reasonable landing sites. Adding to the thrill of flying over this beautiful valley is the aerial view of the impressive Inca ruins or perhaps you would like to fly over the deepest canyon in the world, the Colca Canyon, with the chance of flying with the famous Peruvian condor.
